What this test checks
Reads the charity's registration status with the Charity Commission for England and Wales. A registered charity in good standing is shown as such; others may be shown as removed, as having failed to submit required information, or as insolvent or in administration.
It applies to companies that are also registered charities, and to charities linked to the company you are checking.
What a fail looks like
The charity is not in good standing: removed from the register, insolvent, in administration, or behind with its required submissions.
Harmless explanations
- Charities are removed when they merge, transfer their assets to another charity or close properly.
- A small charity may be briefly late with its annual return.
What to do
- Check the charity's register entry for the reason and date of the change.
- If it has merged, find the charity that took over its work.
