What this test checks
Reads the company's modern slavery statement on the government registry for whether it reports finding any of the International Labour Organization's eleven indicators of forced labour, such as withheld wages, debt bondage, retention of identity documents or excessive overtime.
The most serious finding is a company that reports identifying indicators but describes no action taken.
What a fail looks like
The statement reports forced labour indicators in the company's operations or supply chain, without describing what was done about them.
Harmless explanations
- Reporting that indicators were found, together with the action taken, is a sign of honest due diligence rather than a failing: the risks exist in many supply chains, and companies that look find them.
What to do
- Read the statement: where the indicators were found, and what the company did.
- Ask the company for its remediation plan and how it monitors the suppliers concerned.
