What this test checks
Persons with significant control, a company's beneficial owners, must also verify their identity with Companies House. Existing owners who are not directors of the same company have a deadline tied to their month of birth during the transition; new owners must verify shortly after becoming one.
The test checks each registered owner's verification deadline and whether verification has been completed.
What a fail looks like
At least one registered owner has passed their deadline without verifying. The register then cannot confirm that the person recorded as controlling the company is who they say they are.
Harmless explanations
- Verification completed in the last few days may not yet show on the register.
- An owner who has ceased to be a person with significant control may not have been removed from the register yet.
What to do
- Ask the company to confirm who owns and controls it and when its owners will verify.
- For higher-risk relationships, verify the owner's identity yourself before relying on the register.
